Another Magnificent Magnolia: Yellow Bird

Our second yellow magnolia,  Yellow Bird  (Magnolia acuminata) has been in bloom this week. Blooming nearly three weeks after our other yellow magnolia, Elizabeth, peaks, Yellow Bird is also notable for striking blossoms that are a deep, vivid yellow, the color of fresh lemons, in contrast to Elizabeth's pale buttery yellow petals.

Yellow Bird has been a reliable and prolific bloomer. Because it blooms so late in the spring, the blossoms appear at the same time as the foliage creating a stunning contrast. We planted this tree near the end of the driveway where it anchors the far corner of one of the front cottage gardens and it elicits comments and compliments almost daily from neighbors and strangers alike.

The deep coloration seen in the photographs is the true color and has not been enhanced.
